Ph.D. student from Institute of System Medicine and Health Science (SMHS), Nanxi Li was awarded the ESCEO-IOF Young Investigator Award at the 23rd world congress on osteoporosis, osteoarthritis and musculoskeletal diseases (WCO-IOF-ESCEO 2023) in Barcelona, Spain on 7 May. This annual congress, organized by the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) and the European Society for Clinical and Economic Aspects of Osteoporosis and Osteoarthritis (ESCEO), is the world's leading clinical conference on bone, joint, and muscle health, provides graduate students with the opportunity to share the latest advances in musculoskeletal research with their global counterparts and to promote their enthusiasm for research.
Under the guidance of Assistant Professor Dr. Liu Jin, Li is studying the regulation of bone by skeletal muscle. In the poster presentation at the meeting, she described her work under the title, "Knockdown of skeletal muscle-related microRNAs positively affects bone mass and microstructure in mice." This project determined that the knockdown of myomiRs in skeletal muscle positively affected bone mass and microstructure both in physiological state and mechanical unloading conditions. The team's next focus is to further explore the underlying mechanisms of how myomiRs from skeletal muscle regulate bone.
